Martin Goffman, President and CEO of SequenceBase Corporation has been invited to give a presentation on "The Genesis of USGENE" at the 2009 Patent Information Users Group Boston Biotechnology Meeting. His co-author is Robert Austin, US Representative of FIZ Karlsruhe. This paper will deal with the genesis of USGENE from initial concept, launch on STN and subsequent evolution into an in-house subscription database. Details of the content and utility of USGENE will also be explored. Information professionals are always in need of new tools and databases to help them do their jobs faster, better, and at less cost to their employer. As described in a recent edition of ONLINE magazine (http://www.infotoday.com/online/nov08/Sabroski.shtml or PDF), USGENE was created to help meet this need for patent sequence searchers, by providing a unified, timely and comprehensive USPTO patent sequence database.

Enhanced capabilities for refining homology sequence search answer sets have been implemented in USGENE on STN. Previously it was possible to choose the number of answers from a sequence search to be kept for further processing. Now an alternative option of minimum percentage of the homology query self score value may be applied as the chosen cut-off point, providing for greater flexibility and improved user-interaction.
